Introduction
The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2002. It offers both UG and PG courses in these subjects and also offer a research component which includes M.Phil in Biotechnology. It boasts of well qualified faculty, good infrastructure which includes well equipped laboratories with sophisticated instruments and has also signed many MOUs with various well known institutions. The students of the Department have secured university ranks in the UG and PG Examinations conducted by the University of Madras. The Department regularly conducts symposia and workshops at both the national and international levels. In addition to this it organizes guest lectures by eminent scientists so that students get a firsthand knowledge of the cutting edge research being carried out in Biotechnology. It encourages both the UG and PG students to carry out indoor research projects and motivates them to present and publish their research outcomes. In the year 2010-2011 Ministry of earth Sciences, Department of Ocean Development sanctioned Rs. 1 lakh to conduct a National Symposium cum Workshop on Marine Metagenomics for drug discovery.
